Safe & legal

A bookmaker earns the word “safe” in Britain by holding the right licence, and the register is where that is confirmed. Reputation, design and ratings come second.

Trusted sites, secure apps and the cluster of “not on GAMSTOP” wording are dealt with here. Such wording points to firms outside the Great Britain licence, which is a gap in protection and no selling point.

A licensed firm must establish who a customer is, by name, address and birth date, ahead of the first bet; it also sits inside GAMSTOP and answers to the Commission. Section 33 of the Gambling Act 2005 bites on the operator that offers betting in Great Britain without a licence. Nothing aimed at the bettor has been identified, but protection is lost.
